It was an honor to compete at Aiken’s inaugural Advanced horse trials today at Stable View, and it was that much sweeter to come away with the win, plus all three horses finishing in the top eight of a very competitive division.
Z, owned by Tom Tierney, Simon Roosevelt, Suzanne Lacy, Caroline Moran and Annie Jones, had the second fastest time across Capt. Mark Phillips’ new cross country course to finish 1st on 29.5, adding just 1 time penalty to his dressage score. He is only 8, and all credit really has to go to the horse for a class performance across all three phases today. I didn’t feel like I was going that fast on cross country, but he’s extremely quick off the ground and a fantastic jumper. His run at Plantation Field two weeks ago set him up perfectly for today to help him take the win.
Mr. Candyman, owned by Annie Jones, Bridget Colman, Caroline Moran and Tom Tierney, added just 2.8 cross country time penalties to his dressage score to finish 3rd on 35.7. John and Kristine Norton’s I’m Sew Ready added 8.4 time penalties to his dressage score to finish 8th on 44.4. Z, Mr. Candyman and I’m Sew Ready are all heading to the CCI3* at Fair Hill International in two weeks, and we’re thrilled with their final prep run today.
Barry and Cyndy Olliff, Mark Phillips, Richard Jeffery, Eric Bull, Anne Dearborn and the whole team at Stable View did a fantastic job in hosting this first Advanced horse trials at the venue. The footing on cross country was excellent, and the course was challenging enough with good questions. The show jumping also proved to be influential, so it was an exciting day for the sport. Stable View is firmly on the map as a top-notch facility, and this new course opens the door for even bigger things to come for Aiken.
